Introducing our 245
New CMAs for 2004
Last fall we welcomed 245 new Certified
Management Accountants the largest graduating class
in the Society's history in British Columbia.
Five of those new CMAs were graduates
of the joint MBA/CMA degree program at Queen's University,
a program that CMA Canada introduced in 2000. The remaining
240 new certified members graduated from the CMA Strategic
Leadership Program last June.
Production Manager Grant Parker
of Schneider Foods in Surrey earned the highest individual
grade out of the 2004 graduates from the CMA Strategic Leadership
Program and, as a result, was selected as the class valedictorian.
"Instilling agility, vision, and
leadership: that's what CMA is all about," Grant told
an audience of over 1,000 people during his valedictory speech
at Vancouver's Hyatt Regency Hotel on October 16th, 2004.
"When we are venturing along our
chosen paths, let this mantra be our guiding light. We now
collectively become a living component of the CMA brand, and
we must all contribute to the success of the CMA brand through
our individual actions, shared values, and high ethical standards."
President and Chief Executive Officer
Steve Vieweg of CMA Canada was the guest speaker for
the 2004 Convocation Ceremonies. First Vice President Fred
Zdan of CMA Canada - British Columbia's Board of Directors
returned to the role of master of ceremonies again this year.
Platform guests included President Karen
Botham (Chu), CMA, CMA Canada - British Columbia; Chair
David Hastings of the Board of Directors at CMA Canada;
President and Chief Executive Officer Steve Vieweg
of CMA Canada; Chief Executive Officer Colin Bennett
of CMA Canada - British Columbia; and Chair Robert A. Strachan
of the Management Accounting Institute Board at CMA Canada
- British Columbia. Strachan is also the Immediate Past President
of the Certified Management Accountants of British Columbia.
To celebrate the achievements of the
new CMA graduates and raise the profile of individual new
graduates in their communities, CMA Canada - British Columbia
implemented a public relations plan that included advertising,
mementos from 2004 Convocation Ceremonies, publicity efforts,
and coverage in this issue of Update.
The advertising entailed 29 closed captioned
announcements that ran on BC Global Television from Sunday,
October 10th to Friday, October 15th as well as a two-page
spread that appeared in the October 16th issue of the
Vancouver Sun, this year's media sponsor of the 2004 Convocation
Ceremonies.
This paid advertisement in the Vancouver
Sun listed the names of all the 2004 graduates who wanted
their names included in this initiative. CMA Canada - British
Columbia provided a number of items as special mementoes of
the 2004 Convocation Ceremonies, including program guides,
copies of the Vancouver Sun advertisement, and opportunities
to order photographs and videos from CMA's photographer and
videographer.
At various community and daily newspapers
across BC, the Society also issued news releases to reporters
and business editors who have published news in the past about
their community residents. These publicity efforts have produced
over 37 confirmed, unpaid announcements to date.
Members who'd like additional information about ordering photographs
or videos from the 2004 Convocation Ceremonies should call
Sandra Record at 1.800.663.9646 extension 7006 or 604.484.7006
or email her at sandra@cmabc.com.
If you're interested in obtaining a glossy reprint of the
Vancouver Sun grad advertisement that's suitable for framing,
you or your family can do so by contacting Infoline, a division
of the Pacific Newspaper Group Library at the Sun and Province,
at 604.605.2607 or at infoline@png.canwest.com.

CMA Canada awards the FCMA

Eight CMAs are BC's Fellows of the Society
of Management Accountants (FCMAs). The FCMA Due Diligence

from the provincial FCMA selection committees last June and
approved all 60 last September in Mississauga.

Since the first national honorary designation
was awarded in 1978, the FCMA designation has represented
excellence in management accounting, commitment to CMA Canada
and its provincial partners, and a civic mindedness that brings
community respect to CMA and the profession.
We hosted the 7th Annual FCMA Luncheon
at Vancouver's Hyatt Regency Hotel on Saturday, October 16th.
During the 2004 Convocation Ceremonies later that day, David
Hastings from CMA Canada presented Berkson, Fizzell, Lightheart,
Metz, Nichols, Poon, Strachan, and Yau with their FCMA certificates
and pins.
To celebrate the achievements of the
new FCMAs and raise their profile in the business community,
we implemented a public relations plan that included advertising,
publicity efforts, and coverage in CMA member publications.
The advertising included a double-page,
group advertisement that ran in the December 2004 issue of
BC
Business Magazine as well as ads about individual FCMAs
that appeared in community newspapers such as Victoria Times
Colonist, South China Morning Post, North Shore News, Burnaby
NOW, Vancouver Courier, Richmond News, and the Abbotsford
Times. We also issued news releases to business publications;
these efforts resulted in free announcements about the new
FCMAs being published in the Vancouver Sun, the Business Examiner,
Business in Vancouver, and the Bottom Line.
With the December 2004/January 2005 issue
of Management Magazine, CMA Canada included a leaflet identifying
all 60
new FCMAs across Canada. The leaflet is also posted as
a PDF on CMA Canada's website under "About CMA".
CMA Brand Launch
Launched in September 2004, CMA's new
brand advertising campaign began telling the CMA story in
a new compelling and memorable way. The campaign highlights
the depth and breadth of the skills that you as a CMA possess,
your approach to business, and your ability to see the big
picture. It also showcases how CMAs add value to every aspect
of an organization.
This national campaign in television,
print, and collateral materials such as brochures and trade
show banners.
Our TV commercial is appearing
