2003 Convocation Coverage
CMA Canada - British Columbia welcomed
215 new strategic financial management professionals at Vancouver's
Hyatt Regency Hotel on November 1st.
Nineteen of those new CMAs were graduates of the MBA/CMA
degree program at Queen's University, the largest class of
BC-based MBA/CMA graduates from that university since CMA
Canada and Queen's introduced the joint degree in 2000. The
remaining 196 new certified members graduated from the CMA
Strategic Leadership Program last June.
Senior Business Analyst Rick Wilson of Canadian Forest Products
Ltd in Prince George earned the highest individual grade out
of the 2003 graduates from the CMA Strategic Leadership Program
and, as a result, was selected as the class valedictorian.
"The CMA designation is testimony to the marketplace
that we have acquired and developed relevant, integrated strategic
management skills," Wilson told an audience of over 1000
people during his valedictory address on November 1st. "The
market is identifying with and reaching for the CMA difference
- leadership in strategic decision-making. That's why we chose
to become CMAs and that's the example we carry forward in
everything that we do."

Introducing BC's New Honorary
Members
Honorary membership is the recognition of the outstanding
contributions that a non-member has made to the overall success
of CMA Canada - British Columbia. At the 2003 Convocation
Ceremonies, CMA Canada - British Columbia celebrated the extraordinary
contributions that two non-members have made to the organization.
Paul Levie and Maureen Roger were welcomed as new honorary
members on November 1st at Vancouver's Hyatt Regency Hotel.
An instructor at Camosun College since 1989 and at the University
of Victoria since 1991, Paul Levie has instructed thousands
of students and has helped cultivate many young business leaders.
Many of Levie's former students have earned some of the highest
scores in all of Canada on the CMA National Entrance Exam.
Levie also spearheaded the development of the CMA National
Entrance Exam Preparation Course at Camosun College in 1996
and the CMA FastTrack Program at the same institution
in 1999. Today, he continues to instruct in the CMA FastTrack
Program and to mentor many CMA students preparing for the
National Exam.
The second honorary membership recipient was Maureen Roger.
Roger dedicated eight consecutive years of service as a lay
representative on the Board of Directors at CMA Canada - British
Columbia from 1992 to 2002. She also served as a board liaison
for the CMA Strategic Leadership Program, providing her expertise
and counsel. Prior to becoming a consultant, Roger was the
executive director at the Wildlife Rescue Association for
nearly five years.
Introducing BC's New Life
Members
Life membership is a special acknowledgement that is awarded
to certified members in British Columbia who have been CMAs
for 20 or more years and have contributed significantly to
the profession of management accounting and the overall success
of CMA Canada at any level. At the 2003 Convocation Ceremonies
in Vancouver, the year's new CMAs and the rest of the CMA
community applauded the accomplishments of CMA Canada - British
Columbia's four new life members:
Loreen Francis, Donald Hall, Arthur Low, and Robert Pomerleau.
Since earning her CMA designation in 1974 from CMA Canada
- Saskatchewan, Loreen Francis
has mentored many colleagues as well as CMA students who wanted
to become Certified Management Accountants. Her long and prosperous
career included senior roles at the Corporation of Delta,
The City of Whitehorse, The City of Nanaimo, and The Department
of Finance at the Government of British Columbia. Francis
retired in 1996 and now resides in Parksville.
Donald Hall, who earned
his CMA designation in 1967 from CMA Canada - Ontario, has
provided his expertise in several capacities to further the
efforts of CMA Canada at the provincial level. His successful
and varied business career included senior roles at the Bank
of Montreal, Government of Yukon, BC School District 88, and
the Royal Canadian Air Force. Hall retired in 1987 and now
resides in Abbotsford.
Over the years, Arthur Low
helped establish various correspondence courses in management
accounting. After he earned his CMA designation in 1962 from
CMA Canada - Manitoba, Low sought new and diverse challenges
that included senior roles at Financial Programs Inc., Government
of Malaysia, and The Pakistan Institute of Industrial Accountants.
Low retired in 1986 and now resides in Beaverton, Oregon.
After earning his CMA designation in 1983 from CMA Canada
- British Columbia, Robert Pomerleau
served on a number of boards and committees at CMA Canada
at the national, provincial, and chapter levels. His prosperous
career included senior roles in several ministries with the
Government of British Columbia. During his professional career,
he mentored many colleagues and supported their pursuit of
the CMA designation. Pomerleau, who is also a Certified Public
Accountant (CPA), retired in 1999 and now resides in Surrey.
CMA Canada - British Columbia also acknowledged BC's new
Fellows of the Society of Management Accountants (FCMAs) during
the 2003 Convocation Ceremonies. These new FCMAs were introduced
in the Fall 2003 issue of Update. To read that article, click

CMA - SFU Business Academic
Fellowships
As one of CMA Canada's quality growth initiatives, the creation
of CMA - SFU Business Academic Fellowships at Simon Fraser
University (SFU) in the Fall of 2003 serves to strengthen
the organizations' partnership in management education.
The program includes two $25,000 CMA - SFU Business Academic
Fellowships at SFU. At the First Annual CMA and SFU Business
Research Dinner in November, the Society and the university
announced the awarding of the first fellowship to Maureen
Fizzell, CMA, and Associate Dean for the Faculty of Business
at SFU.
As a CMA - SFU Business Academic Fellow for the next three
years, Fizzell will continue to develop curriculum to prepare
business undergraduate students to meet the challenge of the
CMA National Entrance Exam. Fizzell played an integral role
in CMA Canada's accreditation of SFU's BBA program
the first program in British Columbia with this distinction
in June 2002.
"Over the years, Maureen has instructed thousands of
business students and in that way has helped to shape many
of our current leaders," says Colin Bennett, CMA, FCMA,
and Chief Executive Officer at CMA Canada - British Columbia.
"She's also a CMA and it's particularly gratifying to
be able to assist someone like Maureen, who is very committed
to furthering the profession of management accounting and
preparing business students for a changing business world,
with her research and program development efforts."
CMA Canada's accreditation of the business undergraduate
program at SFU is important for the growth of the profession
of management accounting in BC. The accreditation reflects
the overall strength and quality of the BBA program at SFU.
It also enables business graduates who qualify to earn their
CMA designation in as little as two years of part-time study.
BBA graduates who have course credit covering all of CMA's
18 syllabus topics areas may qualify for exemption from Part
1 of the CMA National Entrance Exam.
CMA Canada is the first professional accounting organization
in North America to accredit business programs at leading
universities. As the first business program to be accredited
in British Columbia, the business undergraduate program at
Simon Fraser University earned full accreditation status in
June 2002. Today, nineteen universities across Canada offer
business programs that have been accredited by CMA Canada.
For More Information:

to ensure they qualify for exemption of Part 1 of the CMA
National Entrance Exam after they graduate with their degree

CMA Spotlight: Karen Botham
Karen Botham (Chu), BCom (Honours), CMA, was elected President
of the Certified Management Accountants of British Columbia
for a two-year term at the Annual General Meeting at Vancouver's
Hyatt Regency Hotel on Friday, September 19th. For the next
two years, Botham will focus on several key goals that include
delivering on quality membership growth, presenting an unified
brand in the Canadian marketplace, and ensuring internal effectiveness
at CMA Canada - British Columbia.
"We must gain momentum on quality membership growth
now to achieve sustainability in 2006 when the degree requirement
takes effect in British Columbia," says Botham.
British Columbia is the last province to implement the degree
requirement for eligibility for the CMA National Entrance
Exam. In an effort to gain momentum, CMA Canada - British
Columbia continues to pursue and develop alternate channels
that lead to the CMA designation, including accredited business
programs, the CMA Executive Program, and joint MBA/CMA programs.
Botham says that members of CMA Canada - British Columbia
also play a critical role in building that momentum. She suggests
that members actively promote the CMA designation through
their actions in the workplace or by talking to potential
CMA students or employers about the designation.
"As CMAs, we are all real life examples of what CMAs
can do," she says. "By furthering the designation
collectively, we also further ourselves as individuals."
Botham, who graduated from the CMA Strategic Leadership Program
in 1997, became very involved with CMA Canada - British Columbia
shortly after earning her CMA designation. She became a volunteer
with the Vancouver Chapter, eventually becoming Chair before
progressing from 2nd Vice President to President on CMA Canada
- British Columbia's Board of Directors. Botham committed
to the volunteer work because she was impressed with the CMA
accreditation process and what the experience gave her personally
and professionally. In other words, she wanted to give something
back.
"I find it very rewarding to be in a position now to
drive the strategic direction of the Society and to ensure
the continued success of the CMA designation," she says.
"I also value my interactions with our members, which
help me understand their needs and vision for the designation."
For CMA students working through the CMA accreditation now,
she recommends three things: getting involved with the Society,
getting out of their comfort zone, and finding a mentor. All
members who volunteer help build their personal networks.
She also points out that her best learnings have resulted
from taking risks and taking on things that were initially
unfamiliar to her.
"Sometimes I've succeeded and sometimes I've failed,
but I also learned the most from my mistakes," says Botham.
Having relied on the support and guidance of mentors throughout
her career, she says she continues to seek out mentors to
guide her in her decisions.
Karen Botham is the Team Lead - Contact Center Initiative
at TELUS in Burnaby where she plays a leadership role in rebuilding
TELUS' Contact Centres to world class levels. She credits
her CMA skills for playing a crucial role in her success by
providing the business acumen and strong communication skills
necessary to manage extensive projects. That business acumen
was proven with the CMA National Entrance Exam and was built
upon with the CMA Strategic Leadership Program. The CMA Strategic
Leadership Program, the only one of its kind in Canada, develops
and enhances communication and presentation skills as well
as strategic leadership abilities.
CIMA Membership opportunities
for CMAs
CMA Canada and the UK-based Chartered Institute of Management
Accountants (CIMA) signed a ground-breaking mutual recognition
agreement in October that provides members of CMA Canada with
preferred access to membership in CIMA and vice versa.
"Membership in our respective organizations will open
up new career opportunities for management accountants and
enable them to provide the strategic leadership, financial
prowess, resources and research to support businesses, government
and academia," says Steve Vieweg, CMA, FCMA, and the
Chief Executive Officer of CMA Canada.
"CMA Canada is the only other professional body in the
world which awards a qualification in management accountancy,
at a standard equivalent to CIMA," says Claire Ighodaro,
President, CIMA. "Our alliance with CMA Canada will enable
both of our organizations to promote management accountancy
and support management accountants in the UK as well as Canada.
We intend to build on this collaborative relationship by sharing
resources to benefit management accountants and their employers
worldwide."
CIMA represents over 77,000 students and 60,000 members in
155 countries. For more information about CIMA, click

Continuing Professional Development
Opportunities for CMAs: Online Management Development Courses
at Athabasca University
CMA Canada and Athabasca
University will launch their online management development
course series in early 2004. The series, exclusive to members
of CMA Canada, include five different management courses that
have been customized for the specific needs of CMAs as strategic
financial management professionals in today's global marketplace.
Those courses are Leadership: Accelerating the Learning Curve;
Leading and Managing Organizational Change; Coaching: Leadership
in Action; Developing Effective Knowledge Management Practices;
and Exploiting Supply Chain Technologies.
Several advantages distinguish these online management development
courses. Because all the course participants are highly experienced
managers and professionals, most of the course time is dedicated
to real-world application of the concepts. CMAs who take the
courses will also be able to build their networks, discuss
current work or professional issues, and benefit from the
experience and perspective from peers. Group work characterizes
much of the work required for the courses, so participants
will be able to refine their teambuilding and leadership skills.
These courses cost $950 each plus GST. To earn a certificate,
CMAs must take a minimum of three courses and for doing so,
they will earn a 10% discount. In addition to these courses,
CMA Canada offers seven online courses free of charge to CMAs.
These courses include Balanced Scorecard, Redesigning the
Finance Function, Strategic Cost Management, Customer Profitability
Analysis, Target Costing, Environmental Costing, and E-Biz
is Good Biz. For more information about these free online
courses, click

Columbia continues its recruitment advertising campaign designed
to reach full and part-time students who are now pursuing degrees.
Billboard ads will appear at the University of British Columbia

reach university and college students who use transit to attend
school, outdoor advertisements will also appear in the key areas
frequented by the highest concentration of post-secondary students.
In addition, print ads will appear in the Georgia Straight in
the Lower Mainland and in the Okanagan newspaper, which covers
many of the major cities in the interior. All of these ads are
designed to generate awareness among 18-24 year-olds and to
encourage these prospective CMA students to contact CMA Canada
