Changes to the CMA Scholarship Program

If you recall what it was like to be a full-time student, you know how hard it can be to take that first big step towards earning a professional designation like CMA. Since the late 1970s, we have delivered our CMA Scholarship Program through 23 post-secondary institutions in British Columbia, awarding scholarships of $300 to $1500 to the province's brightest business students.

With the degree requirement for the CMA National Entrance Exam taking effect October 2006, we have made some recent changes to the CMA Scholarship Program to make it easier for upcoming graduates with degrees to choose CMA. Effective September 2004, we are offering a total of 14 CMA scholarships at eleven post-secondary institutions in BC. Recipients will be able to use their CMA Scholarship towards a $1500 remission of CMA fees, such as CMA Student Membership and the CMA National Entrance Exam.

These scholarships are now available from Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia, Malaspina University College, British Columbia Institute of Technology, Okanagan University College, University College of the Cariboo, Kwantlen University College, University College of the Fraser Valley, Trinity Western University, Capilano College, and the University of Northern British Columbia. Two CMA scholarships are available at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and BCIT. One CMA scholarship is available at each of the remaining schools.

Help business students choose CMA and donate what you can to the CMA Scholarship Fund. Call Sandra Record at 604.484.7006 or email her at sandra@cmabc.com

Volunteers who made a Big Difference for CMA during the last year

The best ambassadors for the CMA designation are successful CMA members like you. And by volunteering for CMA initiatives in BC, these special people have enhanced their professional profile, showcased their skills and expertise, guided careers and mentored business students, and demonstrated the unique qualifications of CMAs.

They served on committees and task forces. They delivered presentations and participated in CMA-hosted or sponsored events. They mentored CMA students and business students who are considering a career as a CMA. And so much more.

To all of our volunteers who contributed their best to CMA during our last fiscal year — July 1st, 2003 to June 30th, 2004 — we salute you and hope you help us raise the bar for volunteers this year.

Many thanks to our members who volunteered for CMA: Click here for a full list.

While every effort was made to ensure that this list is complete and accurate, we apologize for any omissions or inaccuracies. To advise us of any corrections required to your membership record, please email linda@cmabc.com

Ted Wong joins CMA as a Student Advisor for the CMA FastTrack Program and the CMA/MBA program offered by Queen's University

We're pleased to announce the appointment of Ted Wong to the role of CMA student advisor at CMA Canada - British Columbia. Ted comes to us with a diverse background: a Bachelor Science from Simon Fraser University, a Diploma in Technology (Greenhouse Technology) from Kwantlen University College, and a Diploma in Technology (Corporate Finance) from BCIT. He worked for nearly 10 years in the horticultural industry before deciding to switch to a career in business in 2003. Ted is now taking courses from the Canadian Securities Institute and is preparing to challenge the CMA National Entrance Exam in 2005.

In his role as CMA Student Advisor, Ted helps prospective and existing CMA students determine which of CMA's flexible programs may be right for them. He meets with people one-on-one and delivers general information sessions at our office at Suite 1055, Two Bentall Centre, 555 Burrard every Thursday at 1:30 pm. One of the things that Ted enjoys most about meeting with prospective and existing CMA students is helping them customize a path to the CMA designation that meets their personal needs. Ted says his educational background and work experience makes it easy for him to relate to people who are contemplating a career change.

If you're a CMA student member who wants to know more about the January or September 2005 intake of the CMA FastTrack Program, Ted is looking forward to hearing from you. You can reach him at ted@cmabc.com or 604.484.7068.
