Introducing BC's new FCMAs for 2003

Six CMAs in British Columbia are new Fellows of the Society of Management Accountants (FCMAs). The FCMA Due Diligence Committee at CMA Canada received a total of 40 nominations from the provincial FCMA selection committees and approved all 40 on September 5th in Mississauga.

BC's new FCMAs include Theodore T.Y. Chen, BCom, MBA, FAIA (Hon), CMA, FCMA, Professor and Head, Department of Accounting, Hong Kong Shue Yan College, Hong Kong; William J. Bryden, BCom, MBA, CMA, FCMA, Chief Operating Officer (Vancouver), Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, Vancouver; W. James Fedorak, BEd, MEd, CMA, FCMA, retired, Kamloops; and Colin Bennett, CMA, FCMA, Chief Executive Officer, CMA Canada - British Columbia, Vancouver. CMA Canada - Saskatchewan recommended its former long-time member, Yvonne Pinder, who was also granted her FCMA in September. Pinder, BComm, MBA, CMA, FCMA, is a Project Manager at the Okanagan University College in Kelowna. CMA Canada - Ontario recommended a member now living in BC, Jane Peverett, who is a new FCMA as well. Peverett, BCom, MBA, CMA, FCMA, is the Chief Financial Officer at the British Columbia Transmission Corporation.

Since the first national honorary designation was awarded in 1978, the FCMA designation has represented excellence in management accounting, commitment to CMA Canada and its provincial partners, and a civic mindedness that brings community respect to the CMA and the profession.

With the support of the new national FCMA Due Diligence Committee and the national CMA Board of Directors, the BC FCMA Selection Committee and its other provincial counterparts had more responsibility in the 2003 nomination and recommendation process. Earlier this year, the BC FCMA Selection Committee solicited nominations for consideration from BC members and plans to improve on this new nomination process for 2004. The committee includes John Mould, CMA, FCMA; George Hartmann, CMA, FCMA; Brian Kennedy, CMA, FCMA; Robert Stuart, BCom, CMA, FCMA; and Robert E. Taylor, CMA, FCMA.

To celebrate the accomplishments of BC's new FCMAs for 2003, CMA Canada - British Columbia is hosting the 6th Annual FCMA Luncheon at Vancouver's Hyatt Regency Hotel on Saturday, November 1st. Later that day, Michael dos Santos from CMA Canada will present Bennett, Bryden, and Fedorak with their FCMA certificates and pins during the 2003 Convocation Ceremonies.

Individual FCMA announcement advertisements will appear in the North Shore News, Burnaby Now, Kamloops This Week, Kelowna Daily Courier, and South China Morning Post on November 5th. Group FCMA advertisements will appear in the Vancouver Sun on November 5th and in Business in Vancouver's November 11th-18th issue. CMA Canada has profiled the 40 new FCMAs across the country in its Fall 2003 issue of Strategic Direction, a special national publication that will accompany the October issue of Management Magazine.

Advanced standing and transfer credit available for CMAs accepted into AU's programs

Looking for an MBA program that will take your CMA designation into account? Consider the Executive MBA, MBA in Information Technology, or the MBA in Project Management available from Athabasca University (AU).

Earlier this year, CMA Canada and Athabasca University signed an agreement that enables CMAs to use their professional expertise and proven business knowledge to obtain advanced standing and transfer credits in its three available MBA programs.

The AU MBA curriculum builds on CMAs' unique management accounting background in an intensely interactive, collaborative learning environment that focuses on the application of academic theory to management practice. Innovations and new practices within organizations are shared across geographical locations, cultures, and industry sectors - leading to a cutting-edge, global business education.

Minimum admission requirements for AU's MBA programs for CMAs vary. CMAs with an undergraduate degree and a minimum of three years of professional experience with management level responsibilities are encouraged to apply. CMAs who do not have an undergraduate degree but have a minimum of five years of professional experience with management level responsibilities also meet the minimum admission requirements. Once CMA applicants are admitted into an AU MBA program, Athabasca University grants them the advanced standing and transfer credits applicable to the graduate degree that the CMAs have chosen to pursue.

Applications for May 2004 admission into any of the three MBA programs at AU are being accepted until February 15th, 2004.

For More Information

Athabasca University will hold "MBA for CMAs" Information Sessions in the Lower Mainland in January 2004. To have your name added to their contact list, call Program Advisor Nola Reichart at the Athabasca University at 1-800-561-4650 or email her at nolar@athabascau.ca

CMA Canada sponsors accredited professional development program for directors

CMA Canada has signed on as a national sponsor of The Directors College, which was recently established by The Conference Board of Canada and the McMaster University's Michael G. DeGroote School of Business. The college offers a comprehensive professional development program leading to the Chartered Director (C.Dir) designation, Canada's first and only designation for corporate directors.

The Directors College has several unique features. It is independent of the corporate director community and has a diverse faculty that will bring fresh perspectives to the program. The curriculum addresses legal and regulatory environment, compensation issues, financial management and auditing issues, codes of ethics, and directors' roles and responsibilities. It also explores board dynamics, board behavior and the informal interplay between board and management. The professional development program also explores the relationship between governance and corporate social responsibility.

The program consists of five sessions, all of which require two days to complete. The first session is scheduled for November 13th to the 15th. The next offering for the first session is scheduled for February 2004.
